The Blueprint: What the Bible Says About Being a Man
In a world that gives us a thousand different definitions of what a “real man” is, where do we turn for a standard that doesn’t change with the season?
At BROH Life, we believe in a blueprint. We believe the standard for true manhood isn’t set by culture, by movies, or by social media. It was set thousands of years ago in the pages of the Bible. It’s not about being the loudest, the richest, or the toughest. It’s about building a rock-solid character and living a life of purpose.
So, what does that blueprint actually say?
The Core Character Before we talk about what a man does, we have to talk about who he is. The Bible is clear that manhood is first and foremost a matter of character. The apostle Paul gave this direct charge to his protégé, Timothy, and it rings just as true for us today:
“But as for you, O man of God, flee these things. Pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, steadfastness, gentleness.” (1 Timothy 6:11)
That one word pursue is everything. It’s an active word. It’s a hunt. It’s a daily grind. It’s not something we just are; it’s something we actively chase.
Paul doubles down in another letter: “Be watchful, stand firm in the faith, act like men, be strong. Let all that you do be done in love.” (1 Corinthians 16:13-14). Notice the balance? It’s not just “be strong.” It’s “be strong” and “do everything in love.” True biblical manhood isn’t about brute force; it’s about strength under control, guided by love, humility, integrity, and self-control.
The Man in Action: A Life of Responsibility Character is proven by action. The Bible lays out clear responsibilities that call a man to step up and lead, not from a place of domination, but from a place of service.
He is a Provider and Protector. “But if anyone does not provide for his relatives, and especially for members of his household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.” (1 Timothy 5:8). This is a non-negotiable. It means working hard to provide, but it goes deeper. It means providing spiritual strength, emotional security, and a safe-haven for those you love.
He is a Servant-Leader. In our culture, “leader” often means “boss.” The biblical model flips that upside down. Jesus himself said he “came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” (Matthew 20:28).
As a Husband & Father, this means loving his wife “as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her” (Ephesians 5:25). That’s a call to sacrificial, selfless love. It means bringing up his children “in the discipline and instruction of the Lord” (Ephesians 6:4), which requires being present, patient, and persistent.
The Ultimate Model This standard sounds impossibly high, and on our own, it is. That’s why the blueprint isn’t just a list of rules; it’s a person. The ultimate model for manhood is Jesus Christ. Think about it. Jesus was the perfect blend of every manly attribute. He was:
Courageous, standing up to corrupt leaders and speaking hard truths.
Gentle, showing compassion to the outcast, the sick, and the children.
A Servant-Leader, washing his own disciples’ feet.
Strong, enduring unimaginable pain and sacrifice for a purpose greater than himself. He is the standard. The BROH Life: United We Rise This is the high calling of manhood. It’s a daily battle to choose integrity over convenience, service over self, and faith over fear. It’s not a journey we were ever meant to walk alone. This is why we need brotherhood. We need men who will hold us accountable, pick us up when we fall, and challenge us to keep pursuing that high calling. As the proverb says, “As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another.” This is the BROH Life. Let’s commit to being these men. Let’s build this life. United We Rise.
